Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Emo isn’t traditionally a genre that has ever been considered particularly cool, but the more recent permutations of the genre seem to be littered with a lot more try-hards. Once upon a time, emo was punk’s embarrassingly dorky cousin and the gathering place for bands that I’m tempted to call guilty pleasures, but you know what? Fuck it. Promise Ring ruled. I remember digging Braid even though I haven’t listened to them in a decade — maybe those albums hold up, too. Boston’s I Kill Giants nails that sound, from the knotty guitar work, mathy arrangements and sometimes less-than-artful heart-on-sleeve lyrics. They even made sure to check the box next to “Pick a Stupid Name.” It’s weird that this is kinda sorta retro now, but give me this over that Warped Tour crap any day. They’re touring with Everything Ever, who also sound like total dorks — mostly in a good way.
