Of Montreal

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

When Of Montreal auteur Kevin Barnes first appeared on the Athens, Ga., scene in the late ’90s, psych-pop with a vaudevillian feel reminiscent of Harry Nilsson was the name of the game. Starting with 2004’s Satanic Panic in the Attic, lyrics grew progressively darker and more obtuse, and sounds more dissonant and electronic. Not that dance music for twisted hedonists is a bad thing, but Barnes worked the idea over until it grew stale and thin. 2013’s Lousy With Sylvianbriar is a much-needed dose of fresh air and sunshine that’s put Barnes back on his game, with the snarling, jangling guitars of his newly adopted home in San Francisco filling out the band’s most engaging work in five years. Houston’s Wild Moccasins open; the coed indie quintet features Zahira Gutierrez, a striking vocalist with range, control and dramatic flair to rival Barnes’ own.
