Los Colognes and Friends

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

This rangy six-man Nashville ensemble made one of 2013’s prettiest debut LPs with Working Together, which manages to combine the best influences from a lot of groups I have mixed feelings about — the ringing guitars of Dire Straits, the spacious atmospherics of Pink Floyd, the gently loping country-folk melodies and woolly harmonies of the Grateful Dead — into a warmly enveloping whole. Its founders, singer-guitarist Jay Rutherford and drummer Aaron Mortenson, cite J.J. Cale as their inspiration, but it’s the woozy 3 a.m. blues of “Crazy Mama” rather than the burbling boogie of “Call Me the Breeze” that holds here, augmented by offbeat but apt instrumental flourishes: a wheezy roller-rink organ, sweeping steel guitar. It’ll be fascinating to hear how this translates live, in a show with friends including Belle Adair and Steelism.
