Sad Baxter w/Beach Benders & The Reneaus
It’s a new year, and now that the hangovers have (mostly) worn off, it’s high time to hear some new music. The Reneaus, recent transplants from Bowling Green, Ky., start things off with a collection of songs that are catchy without feeling hooky, rich and dark without being dour, and pleasantly cohesive despite drawing fairly equally from ’60s country, soul and pop. Singer Ashley Cooper Winn’s just-polished-enough voice is a highlight, reminiscent of Jessica Lea Mayfield’s, and she works interesting lyrical ideas into the band’s pop-oriented framework: “My head caught a hint of it / My heart caught the scent of it / My mind put a spin on it,” she croons in “Fools,” the lead track from The Season, explaining it all without giving too much away. Headliner Sad Baxter is the brainchild of singer-guitarist Deezy Youngdahl and drummer Alex Mojaverian. Describing themselves as “inspired by dogs of all sizes,” the two musicians conjure mid-’90s pop without making us want to go listen to our copy of Exile in Guyville instead. Beach Benders round out the night.
