Herzog w/Spanish Candles & Study Hall

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

No matter our age, there’s always a little bit of angsty teenager with conflicting appetites for familiarity and novelty in all of us. One part Rust Never Sleeps skronk, one part It Still Moves heroic roots-pop, full of surprises at every turn, Cleveland’s Herzog satisfies those desires with songs that are complex and thoughtful rather than clever, and a sweet-and-sour feast of guitars. A pair of local bands also driven by the six-string are the perfect complement, each providing their own fusion of power pop, alt-rock and latter-day garage. Spanish Candles bring it fast, loud and gritty, with a strained vocal style fans of PUJOL and Diarrhea Planet will know and love. Study Hall, which actually includes a member of DP (as well as Churchyard’s drummer pulling double duty), dials back the attack a bit, leaving room for vocal harmonies and other pop niceties.
