The Ringers

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

The way the jazz-rock fusion movement of the 1970s has merged with the jam-band aesthetic of later decades is an interesting phenomenon — if Miles Davis himself were alive today, he might be listening to Widespread Panic records. Over the years, the players who make up the quintet known as The Ringers have played with lots of great jazz-rock and jam-band innovators. Guitarist Wayne Krantz took some amazing solos on Donald Fagen’s 2006 full-length Morph the Cat, while Jimmy Herring has done time in Aquarium Rescue Unit and now occupies the lead guitarist’s chair in Widespread Panic. Bassist Etienne Mbappé has lent his talents to projects by John McLaughlin and Josef Zawinul, while guitarist Michael Landau has played with the likes of Robben Ford. Rounding out the group is drummer Gary Novak, who has worked with Allan Holdsworth, George Benson and Chick Corea.
