Chelsea Wolfe

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

The title of Chelsea Wolfe’s 2013 album, Pain Is Beauty, sounds like it could have been lifted from an ode on a goth-teen urn, but the L.A.-based singer-songwriter plumbs the darkness with more nuance and sophistication than angst alone can produce. Wolfe’s rich voice lends her songs — which run from ethereal to bracingly visceral — a spooky grace, prowling between echoey guitar, skeletal percussion and spectral keyboard layers. The album’s opening track, “Feral Love,” soundtracked a Game of Thrones trailer, and it’s got the wintry, foreboding vibe you’d expect from a song given that job. If love is a red dress, you know how it got that color.
