Rhonda Vincent Album Release

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Rhonda Vincent has forged a notable career as the mandolin-playing lead singer of consistently top-flight bluegrass band The Rage, a magnet for industry awards and a passenger of the genre’s most pedigreed tour coach, the Martha White Bluegrass Express. But there’s a whole other side to her musical sensibilities that tends to get lesser billing: She’s also a trad-country balladeer in the George Jones tradition, given to lingering blue notes, curlicues and ornamented emotionality. Always has been, too. Her self-produced new album Only Me is strategically split into bluegrass and country discs, with heartache ballads on each, plus bluegrass standard “Drivin’ Nails” reframed as plugged-in, piano-backed country, a weeper titled “Teardrop Over You” that she penned as a teenage member of her family’s bluegrass band, and an unexpected ’grassy guest turn from Willie Nelson, including jazzily eccentric, sprung rhythm guitar licks. Vincent’s ever so playfully made her point.
