Gracie Curran and the High Falutin' Band

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Few blues artists can turn the line between the traditional and the contemporary into a tightrope, but Gracie Curran — a new talent from Boston making her local debut at the Nashville Blues Society’s monthly free Juke Joint Blues Blast concert — blends the power of legendary belters like Bessie Smith with a tightly coiled energy that drives her edgy, inventive phrasing into new territory. Her 2013 debut album Proof of Love is a surprise breakout that’s slowly steamrolled to international airplay, and was just nominated for a 2014 Blues Music Award for Best Debut Album. Curran headlines a bill that includes another winning vocal talent, Nashville’s own Markey, whose band rekindles the embers of the once-conflagrant Stax empire. And completing the lineup is the Bullfrog Revue, an acoustic quartet that creates a wonderfully madcap sound the late Memphis producer Jim Dickinson might have described as a “drunken circus parade weaving down the street.”
