Randy Travis

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

In 1992, Randy Travis released a couple of greatest-hits collections that included a few previously unreleased tracks. Already a neotraditionalist master who had scored with such late-’80s tunes as “Honky Tonk Moon” and “Deeper Than the Holler,” Travis kept going into the next decade. One of the previously unreleased songs on Greatest Hits Volume Two was the superb “Take Another Swing at Me,” which found Travis exquisitely singing a Western swing-influenced melody. It was a vocal performance worthy of such exemplars as Lefty Frizzell and George Jones. In recent years, the North Carolina native has had scrapes with the law, and he’s certainly not the commercial force he was 25 years ago. Still, Travis stands as one of country’s greatest singers — he’s set to perform with George Jones at the Possum’s November farewell show in Nashville, which says something about the depth of Travis’ talent.
