Hustle - The Biggest Dance party of the Year feat. Coach, DJ Rate & Reno Bo
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …
Pop quiz: What happens when you put all of the city’s most popular DJs from all the most popular dance parties in one room for one party? Fuck if we know! But our money’s on the sort of epic love-fest that people talk will about for years to come. Seriously, who hasn’t gone to bed half-drunk and dreamt of a night when the retro-soul cats from Keep On Movin’ team up with the backpack-classicists of The Boom Bap and the deep-disco-ducks from Whiskey Disco? OK, maybe we’re the only folks who dream of cage-match-style dance parties, but once this goes down, you won’t think we’re quite as crazy. Or maybe you will — we’re not claiming any responsibility for our actions on the dance floor tonight. And since this is the last remnant of the unfortunately postponed SoundLand festival, you can count on us to cram an entire weeks’ worth of partying into one night. 9 p.m. at Cannery Ballroom

R. Stevie Moore w/David Cloud and the Gospel of Power
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …
Listening to every song in local lo-fi legend R. Stevie Moore’s expansive catalog would honestly be a full-time job. Seriously, if you had a Monday-to-Friday 9-to-5 wherein you simply listened to all of RSM’s material, top to bottom, you might never catch up with him. A quick perusal of Moore’s Bandcamp page alone reveals over 200 singles, albums, EPs and collections, among them a recent tribute to Russian political prisoners Pussy Riot as well as a collaboration with fellow psychedelic pop weirdo Ariel Pink titled Ku Klux Glam. And yes, some of RSM’s tracks are field recordings, or random plinkings on an instrument, or poetry, or — as in the case of “The Excess Gravity Problem” — Moore asking questions like, “Hey bro, why cainchu hold onto nuffin’ … why you keep droppin’ shi?” But for every few weird sonic explorations, there’s an absolutely exceptional slice of progressive pop music, like “Play Myself Some Music” or, fittingly, “Pop Music.” Also on tonight’s bill will be fellow silver-maned Nashville rock originator Dave Cloud and his Gospel of Power. Between Moore’s bedroom pop and Cloud’s psychedelic rock ’n’ roll, these two have been contributing to the “Nashville: More Than Just Country” game since before the PUJOLs, JEFFs, Darlins and Features of the world were even born. Action! will also perform. 9 p.m. at Springwater

Acoustic Tour feat. Bell X1, Duke Special
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …
Ever wonder what mainstream pop might be like had The Stone Roses not put themselves out to pasture? Though Bell X1 sounds more like early Coldplay or Sea Change-era Beck than the aforementioned Mancunians, the powerhouse Irish group survived a similar brush with death when charismatic frontman Damien Rice bowed out before completing their debut record. Drummer Paul Noonan took the helm, and has held it steady through seven albums and massive international tours. Their latest offering, Field Recordings, features new Unplugged-style acoustic arrangements of fan favorites, captured in small, intimate clubs across the U. S. and Europe. Their visit to The Basement comes midway through a North American acoustic tour on which they’ll present much of the same material in a similar way, even in many of the same venues. Fans will be overjoyed, but even for casual listeners it’s a unique opportunity to see arena veterans (who recently played a gig on the roof at Facebook HQ) in the neighborhood bar. Support comes from fellow Irishman Duke Special, a pianist who may get mistaken on the street for Korn’s drum tech, but whose soulful sound compares favorably with Bright Eyes’ best work. 9 p.m. at The Basement

Jackie Greene w/Ruston Kelly
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …
Jackie Greene has undergone quite a transformation since he released a pair of albums on Verve Forecast in the middle of the past decade. Back then he was everything you’d expect from a troubadour with acoustic guitar in hand and harmonica holder around his neck — you know, someone taking aim at weathered and weighty expression. Thing is, he’s since gone where descendents of Dylan don’t usually go: into a steady stream of collaborations with giants of folk- and blues-rock jamming like Phil Lesh and Gov’t Mule. And, interestingly, Greene’s most recent album, 2010’s Till the Light Comes, staked out territory between roots rock and power pop. It was hooky as hell, and a good reason to be on the lookout for his next musical move. 9:30 p.m. at 3rd & Lindsley

Celebrate Nashville feat. Gabriel Meyer Halevy, Positive RePercussions, Half Brass, Shannon Sanders, Piper Jones, Phil Keaggy, The Fairfield Four, JJ Kent, The Ukedelics, Mawre and Company, SHEL, The Future, Off the Wagon, Hooligan's Wake, Annie Lawrence, L'Angelus, Neal Carpenter & Regi Wooten
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …
With more than 50 musical performances on five stages — including funk by Half Brass, Polynesian by Mau Ke Aloha no Hawai’I Hula Pu’ulu, bluegrass by Off the Wagon and traditional Irish by Hooligan’s Wake, to name just a few — and more than 60 food vendors serving up everything from falafel to fried chicken, paletas to pakora, Celebrate Nashville might be the city’s most diverse event. And if all that’s not enough, head over to the “global village,” world goods market and the designated kids/teen areas to get a deeper sense of Music City’s cultural riches. 10 a.m at Centennial Park; more info at celebratenashville.org
